If your college told you your FAFSA was “selected for verification,” take a breath: this is usually a routine check — often random, sometimes a small data mismatch — and almost never an accusation that you did anything wrong. For 2027-28 filers, the groups you can land in have not changed. What has not been published yet is a new item-by-item document list, so the documents below are the 2026-27 list until Federal Student Aid posts the 2027-28 Dear Colleague Letter. Follow the packet your school actually sends.

What does “selected for verification” actually mean?

Being selected for verification means your school must confirm that the information on your FAFSA is accurate before it can disburse need-based federal aid. Selection is partly random and partly formula-driven — a routine quality-control check, not a sign your application was wrong or that anyone suspects fraud.

On your FAFSA Submission Summary, selection shows as an asterisk next to the SAI. If you cannot find the tracking group there, your financial aid office can read it off your file.

Schools are required to verify applicants the federal processing system selects who are receiving subsidized Title IV aid, according to the FSA Handbook’s Application and Verification Guide. In plain terms: a share of applications are picked at random for quality control, and others are flagged because something in the data looked worth double-checking. Either way, the school’s job is simply to confirm the facts.

Is being selected an audit or a fraud accusation?

No. Selection is not an accusation — it does not mean the government thinks you lied, it is not an IRS audit, and it is not a penalty. Plenty of people with completely accurate, straightforward applications get selected purely by chance.

The federal guidance treats verification as a documentation step, not a disciplinary one — you are being asked to show your work, not defend yourself. The right mindset is logistical, not legal: gather what’s requested, send it in one clean packet, and move on.

Which tracking groups apply in 2027-28?

The 2027-28 FAFSA Specifications Guide, Volume 8 says tracking categories remain constant for 2027-28:

  • V1 (Standard) — income and household.
  • V4 (Custom) — identity only.
  • V5 (Aggregate) — income/household and identity.

V2, V3, and V6 are for Federal Student Aid use only. You will not be placed in those.

What documents? The 2027-28 item list is not posted yet

This is the part that trips 2027-28 filers if we pretend otherwise. The item-level list — which tax documents, which identity documents, which worksheet — is published in a Dear Colleague Letter each award year. The current one is GEN-25-10, the 2026-27 FAFSA information to be verified and acceptable documentation, paired with AVG Chapter 4.

The 2027-28 item-level DCL had not been posted as of August 25, 2026. Until it is, the document lists on this site are the 2026-27 lists. Your school’s request is the one that binds you. If the two disagree, send what the school asked for and ask the aid office to confirm.

Two 2026-27 facts that still matter until a new DCL says otherwise:

  • If you consented to the IRS Direct Data Exchange, transferred federal tax information is treated as already verified for the items it covers.
  • The Statement of Educational Purpose was removed from the required verification items in the 2026-27 AVG. Do not hunt down a notary for that form unless your school still asks for it as its own requirement.

Can you still get your financial aid?

Yes, as long as you complete verification — but until verification is satisfactorily completed, your aid is held. Your award will show as “pending” or “tentative,” and the school cannot disburse it. Once your file is verified, the aid releases on the normal schedule, so submit everything at once, early.

For 2026-27, the federal dates are published: 91 FR 37096 (June 22, 2026) requires documents to reach your school by the earlier of 120 days after your last date of enrollment or September 18, 2027, with FAFSA corrections due at the Department by September 11, 2027. No equivalent Federal Register notice for 2027-28 verification deadlines had been posted as of August 25, 2026, so this page does not invent those dates. Ask the financial aid office for its deadline and work to that. Schools may set an earlier date than the federal one.

What should you do next?

Read your tracking group, gather the documents that group requires as your school listed them, submit one complete packet to your school’s official portal, and track it until your aid moves from “pending” to disbursed.

  1. Find the asterisk and the group on your FAFSA Submission Summary (or ask your aid office).
  2. Gather what that group requires — income/tax data for V1, a valid unexpired government photo ID for V4, both for V5 — using the school’s list, not a blog’s.
  3. Submit one complete packet to your school’s official portal — never to a third-party site, and you never pay to complete verification.
  4. Confirm receipt and track it until your aid moves from “pending” to disbursed.

The thing that trips people up most is sending a partial packet or the wrong tax document, which restarts the clock.

What if your finances changed after you filed?

Verification is not the place to report that your finances changed after you filed. That’s a separate process called Professional Judgment, and there’s a strict order of operations: a school cannot process a special-circumstances appeal while a verification hold is open. Even if your real story is “we lost income since filing,” you finish verification first, then appeal. AVG Chapter 5 is the source for that authority; the school decides, and you cannot appeal that decision to the Department of Education.

The bottom line

Selection is routine, your aid is recoverable, and the work is mostly clerical. For 2027-28 the groups are still V1, V4, and V5. The item-level letter for 2027-28 has not posted, so use your school’s list, with the 2026-27 AVG and DCL as the background. Identify your tracking group, submit one complete packet to your school’s portal, and track it to disbursement.
